• A study demonstrates for the first time that the Mediterranean diet protects against stomach cancer
The Mediterranean diet has significant protective effect against gastric cancer, according to a study made by the EPIC network, participated by a group of researchers from the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) and the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL), led by Genevieve Buckland and Carlos A. Gonzalez. The study has been published in the scientific journal 'American Journal of Clinical Nutrition'. [+]

• Bellvitge Hospital is studying a new technique to treat cerebral haemorrhages
Neurosurgeons of Bellvitge University Hospital, in Barcelona (Spain), and researchers from the Institute of Biomedical Research of Bellvitge (IDIBELL) participate in an international project, called CLEAR III, which assesses the effectiveness of the administration of a thrombolytic drug called rt-PA to treat intra-ventricular cerebral haemorrhages (hemorrhagic stroke). There is currently no international consensus about the best treatment of these types of hemorrhagic strokes. [+]

• IDIBELL and UB researchers identify a gene that causes movement problems in mice
The mutation of a gene that encodes a giant protein called HERC1 in mice causes progressive degeneration of neurons in the cerebellum, whose function is to fine-tune vertebrates' gait and balance. This is the conclusion of a study coordinated by Jose Luis Rosa, researcher at the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute of Barcelona (IDIBELL) and the Department of Physiological Sciences II of the Bellvitge Campus of the University of Barcelona. The results have been published in the journal PLoS Genetics. This finding could be helpful in the development of new therapies for neurodegenerative diseases. [+]

• IDIBELL scientists discover a connection between overgrowth and cancer
The research group of Manel Esteller, director of the Program for Epigenetics and Cancer Biology Institute for Biomedical Research of Bellvitge (IDIBELL) and UB Professor, has discovered a link between overgrowth syndromes and the development of cancer. The study explains how the NSD1 gene alteration, responsible of a disease called Sotos syndrome, is also involved in the development of gliomas and neuroblastomas, tumors of the nervous system. The study results is published online in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). [+]

• Cancer cells do not sleep
The laboratory of Manel Esteller, director of the Program of Epigenetic and Cancer Biology of the Bellvitge Institute of Biomedical Research (IDIBELL) has described a mechanism that explains how tumour cells escape from the circadian rhythm and work in an autonomous way. The result of the Cancer Research (official agency of the American Association of Cancer Research-AACR) is being published on Friday in the first fortnight magazine of November. [+]

• IDIBELL researchers describe a mechanism that blocks autodestruction of liver cancer cells
Researchers from Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute of Barcelona (IDIBELL) describe a mechanism that blocks the natural stimuli of programmed death written on the liver tumor cells. The inactivation of this mechanism opens new therapeutic ways against hepatic cancer through the natural autodestructive capacity of tumor cells. The investigation has been published in the October number of the scientific journal Cancer Research. [+]
